Delivery modeThis program is delivered in the classroom, through online learning and in the workplace.
Duration52 weeks, including 40 study weeks and 12 weeks of holidays.
Study load20 hours per week consisting of 14 hours of classroom training and assessment and 6 hours of scheduled and supervised online learning per week.
Work placement of 120 hours.
Additional unsupervised study including research for assessments and general reading is expected to be on average 7 hours a week.  

This qualification reflects the role of individuals in the community, home, or residential care setting who work under supervision and delegation as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, following an individualized plan to provide person-centered support to people who may require support due to aging, disability, or some other reason.

These individuals take responsibility for their outputs within the scope of their job role and delegation. Workers have a range of factual, technical, and procedural knowledge, as well as some theoretical knowledge of the concepts and practices required to provide person-centered support.

The skills in this qualification must be applied by the Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards, and industry codes of practice.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have completed at least 120 hours of work as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of the units of competency.

You must:

  • be at least 18 years of age and have completed the equivalent of Year 12, including mathematics as a subject until at least Year 10  
  • participate in a course entry interview to determine suitability for the course and student needs
  • have an IELTS* score of 6.0 (test results must be no more than 2 years old). English language competence can also be demonstrated through documented evidence of any of the following:
    • educated for 5 years in an English-speaking country; or
    • successful completion of an English Placement Test at IELTS level 6.0.

Further education pathways may include the CHC50121 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care.

Students will need to successfully complete all units in this course to receive a certificate of CHC52021 Diploma of Community Service. Learners who partially complete the qualification will receive a Statement of Attainment for the units they are deemed competent.

It is mandatory to complete work placement hours to be eligible for attainment of this qualification.

This course is delivered through face-to-face training and assessment, as well as through online learning and workplace-based training and assessment.

You must attend 14 hours of on-campus classes each week and complete 6 hours of scheduled, supervised online learning through web-based software weekly for 40 study weeks (4 terms of 10 weeks each). The timetable will specify the timing of your 12 weeks of holiday breaks when you begin the course.

You must complete a 120-hour work placement, which will be added to the scheduled hours. Onepath College will assist you in finding a work placement, or you may find your work placement.

You will also need to complete assessments for this course which may include:

  • Written questions
  • Projects
  • Presentations
  • Reports
  • Role plays/observations
  • Workplace hours logbook

At the beginning of each unit, your trainer and assessor will outline the assessment tasks that must be completed.

Your classes will be conducted in modern classrooms, and you will be able to access Wi-Fi. There are also areas for you to relax, as well as conduct additional study. 

You will be provided with a Student Guide relevant to each unit in your course.  

Satisfactory course progress and attendance are very important to meet visa requirements. Please read the International Student Handbook carefully for more information. You will also be provided with further information about course progress and attendance requirements at your orientation.

We offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to all students. However, as an international student, you are not expected to pursue this opportunity since you likely lack relevant workplace experience and existing skills or knowledge.

Receiving course credit will reduce your course fees and shorten your course duration. We will advise you in writing of any changes to fees or course duration as a result of the credit. You will also be issued a new Confirmation of Enrolment.
